Tetris Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

Whenever a significant prize-giving event draws close, there’s always an outcry for introducing fresh award types to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of fans with niche passions.

Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. So would board games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial above others. This is the request: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications actually cover a lot of ground, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition for anything in 2014
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations in 2019
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent small games, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as most engaged experiences globally continuing this trend for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games competing to become most purchased experience; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers operate at the hard edge game development, creating some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay decades.
