A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.
The official reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in civilian works. They were built at an rapid rate, beating predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised persistent concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This pause was requested while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."
In reply, the president asserted that the train had been running in full adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these national undertakings.
