A recent study suggests that people who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users buying such treatments need to be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a return to original weight within about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.
The team point out that people who lose weight through dieting usually have a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Experts propose the way of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened rebound.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this medication leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Issue?
Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have stopped the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you become ravenous," said a patient.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Use
Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Use is more common among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts caution that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle management.
